Lasers are set at specific wavelengths that will selectively treat certain components of the skin such as hair, veins and sun/age spots.
The Cynosure Alex (used for laser hair & sunspot removal) or ND:Yag (used for darker skin laser hair & vein removal) lasers are used because the laser energy is absorbed by melanin or heme (the red in blood cells). These laser are used because of the selective nature of the laser which are attracted to certain colors causing the other areas of the skin to not be affected.
How the laser for hair removal works:Now laser therapy in Tallahassee and North Florida has a faster, gentler way to remove unwanted hair with great results. The laser applies precisely controlled pulses or energy (electrical and light energy) reaching into the hair follicles that lie beneath the skin. Even darker skinned people in Tallahassee, Thomasville, Quincy, Monticello and surrounding areas can experience the benefits of laser hair removal with the Cynosure Nd:YAG!
The Cynosure state of the art laser system contains a tissue surface-cooling device, which continuously blows cold air on the skin surface at the site of the coming laser pulse. This reduces the pain of the laser pulse. Some say the laser pulse feels like a rubber band being sprung on your skin.
How does hair grow?
The total number of hair follicles is fixed at birth. Two types of hair can be found on our bodies. Vellus hairs are fine, unpigmented or pale hairs that cover most of our body. The thicker, course, pigmented hairs are terminal hairs. Vellus hair can convert to terminal hair at any time but usually due to hormonal changes, genetics and age.
Hair grows from a pouch-like structure below the skin called a hair follicle. Melanin, granules of pigment, is deposited in the hair bulb and gives hair its color. Everyone’s hair grows differently, depending on gender, age, hormones, medication and ethnicity, to name a few.
Hair grows in three different cycles. The active growth phase can last for 1 to 3 years. Active hair has lots of melanin or color. After this phase the hair moves into transition, which last 1-3 weeks. The third phase is the resting phase. This is the dormant phase that lasts about 5 wks to 3 months varying on the hairs location. When growth resumes, the new hair pushes the old hair out.
For affective laser hair removal the follicle needs to be treated in the active phase. The amount and duration of the active cycle varies with the body location. The scalp has an average of 90% active follicles at any time. In comparison, the upper lip has 65% active, the chin has 70% and the underarms and pubic area have 30%, & legs have about 20-30 % in the active cycle.
Laser hair removal can cause color changes in the skin causing either darker or lighter areas. These areas fade over time if sunscreen is used or sun exposure is avoided. Burns, redness or allergic reactions are uncommon. Avoidance of sun exposure, self-tanning products and medication that reacts to sun will decrease the incidence of these occurrences.
The frequency and the intervals between laser hair removal treatments are scheduled to allow for the laser hair removal treatments of as many active cycle hairs as possible. The ideal interval is about 4-8 wks or as soon as new growth is seen. Because every hair is not in the active cycle several treatments will be necessary to remove the hair that subsequently enters into a new growth phase. Also, hair that is gray, blond or red will not absorb enough heat to be effectively removed. The required number of treatments varies with each individual depending on the location of the sites on the body, the color of the hair, skin and your natural hair growth patterns.
